
Teatro Vivo is excited to continue our engagement with local, Central Texas-based writers through our third annual Playwriting Workshop! Open to any playwright whose writing aligns with Teatro Vivo’s mission, this workshop will take place over the course of three Monday evenings in March/April of 2026. This workshop is intended for writers who are actively working on a new play, musical, or other piece of theatrical writing. Facilitated by Mateo Hernandez and Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, playwrights will work to develop their play with the facilitators and fellow writers.
Writers are expected to attend all three workshops. Registration is $25 for the Workshop. Scholarships are available! Space is limited so registration is encouraged as soon as possible!
¡Teatro Vivo se complace en continuar su compromiso con los escritores locales del centro de Texas a través de nuestro tercer taller anual de dramaturgia! Abierto a cualquier dramaturgo cuya obra se ajuste a la misión de Teatro Vivo, este taller se llevará a cabo durante tres lunes de marzo/abril de 2026. Este taller está dirigido a escritores que estén trabajando activamente en una nueva obra de teatro, musical u otra pieza teatral. Impartido por Mateo Hernandez y Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, los dramaturgos trabajarán para desarrollar su obra con los facilitadores y otros escritores.

About the Workshop Facilitators:
Roxanne Schroeder-Arce is an administrator, scholar, artist, teacher and arts advocate. She has recently been named Dean of the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts and Professor at Ohio University. Before OHIO, she was Associate Dean of UTeach Fine Arts and Associate Professor of Theatre Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She also served as Assistant Professor of Theatre Education at both Emerson College in Boston and California State University at Fresno. Her artistry, pedagogy, and scholarship are intertwined and deeply inform her higher education leadership. She received her M.F.A. in Drama and Theatre for Youth from UT Austin and her B.S. degree and teaching credential from Emerson College.
Professor Schroeder-Arce’s research interests include culturally responsive theatre education and cultural representation in theatre for young audiences. Her plays have been presented to children and families in multiple theatres, schools and community spaces throughout the United States. Schroeder-Arce is also a deeply engaged leader and she consistently offers extensive academic, community, national and international service.
A product of Upward Bound and a first-generation college attendee, she has also taught in TRIO programs as well as public schools. Professor Schroeder-Arce has led professional development programs with teachers throughout the United States and internationally in countries such as Costa Rica, South Korea, and Switzerland. She also led a study abroad program in Mexico City. She has received recognition for her work from several organizations, including the Ann Flagg Multicultural Award from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. Mateo Hernandez is a queer, Latinx theatre maker, applied theatre practitioner, pedagogue, and scholar. As a playwright, his play spayce boys has been chosen for the 2020 Ingenio New Play Festival (Milagro Theatre, Teatro Vivo, Cara Mia Theatre) and the 2021 New Plays for Young Audiences: BIPOC Initiative (NYU Steinhardt). Their creative writing revolves around topics of gender and sexuality within Latinx/Chicanx culture. Recent directing credits include Carmela Full of Wishes (Austin Playhouse), Rosita y Conchita (Penfold Theatre: Round Rock, TX), Luna (ZACH Theatre: Austin, TX), Emiliana: A Revolution Cabaret (Coctel Explosivo: Mexico City, MX and Austin, TX). They have also worked with companies such as UrbanTheatre Co., Filament Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Teatro Vivo, Cara Mia Theatre, and Creative Action. Mateo is the 2023 recipient of the Don and Elizabeth Doyle Fellowship from the American Alliance for Theatre & Education. Mateo is a member of the Board of Directors for Teatro Vivo in Austin, TX, a theatre company focused on showcasing Latinx experiences.
